Giving by U.S. foundations to international water projects and programmes has increased from US$ 6.1 million in 1988 to US$ 72.1 million in 2008 (of which US$ 44 million came from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation). In 2008, India was the country that received the largest amount: US$ 11.4 million.
